Scrapbooks from the Personal Papers of Walter Jona

Series

Series DescriptionScrapbooks from the Personal Papers of Walter Jona contains 49 hardcopy scrapbooks with newspaper clippings glued inside. Each scrapbook has been labelled on the cover defining the time period of the clippings and a general theme. Scrapbooks labelled MINISTER PERSONAL usually include all clippings published relating to or relevant to Walter Jona's Parliamentary role at the time: Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs and Assistant Member of Health between 1976-1976; and Minister for Community Welfare Services between 1979 - 1982. Scrapbooks labelled ELECTION include press coverage and promotional material of and for Jona in the lead up to the 1964 election where he was first elected to the Victorian State Parliament as the Member for Hawthorne, and the subsequent 1970, 1973, 1979, and 1982 elections where he stood for re-election, up until his retirement from politics in 1985. There are also a number of miscellaneous scrapbooks covering various political and social themes relevant to the time to Jona's role as member for Hawthorne, as well as coverage of Jona's retirement era and continued public service on various committees - such as the RSPCA. The clippings included in these scrapbooks portray a somewhat balanced view on Jona's tenure as a Victorian Parliamentarian, covering both his success and his controversies. A number of themes prevail across the scrapbooks covering Jona's political career - these include: foster care and controversies around adoption and adoption policies throughout the 1970s and 1980s; prisons, prisoners, and prison reform and the building of the Jika Jika wing at Pentridge Prison and its subsequent closure. Beyond his political career, the scrapbooks also record Jona's active participation and passion as a member of the Hawthorne community and avid sportsperson, with coverage of Jona's successful tenure as President of the Hawthorn City Brass Band, the push for more AFL participation in Victoria, and his advocacy for player and club conduct in cricket. These scrapbooks also cover Jona's wife Alwynne's prolific work in philanthropy and advocacy for a number of health and community organisations, as well as coverage and press cuttings of their wedding.
