Subject Files of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies

Series

Series DescriptionEach File is on a specific subject matter and material collected on a specific subject was placed in the File, hence a File might contain a collection of disparate material such as copies of newspaper clippings from media relations groups; articles and supplements from journals from Australian and overseas media; magazines; pamphlets; essays; reports; cassettes; badges; booklets and some JBoD correspondence, which do not fall into any specific series of correspondence. These Files have not been culled. The only items removed and placed in a separate series were the Media clippings and transcripts of interviews (see Series /042). Where media clippings existed, these items were cross referenced to its appropriate File in the /042 series. It was decided that the transcripts of media interviews had a greater research and historical value, as these might no longer be available and they were regularly provided to the Jewish Board of Deputies, who was the client of these media transcripts. As these Files were dispersed, it was not possible to discover the Files alphabetically nor place the Files in the item list in alphabetical order. Includes some original material such as magazines, newspapers, correspondence and publications relevant to the subject. Though the material, specifically newspaper clippings from the Australian press, copies of articles & literature from publications such as magazines and journals, can be obtained from other sources and in most cases, have been identified as secondary, the appraisal process has determined that this collection might have a covet value, that is, this set of material has been meticulously collated for administrative purpose but in doing so, provides a rich insight into the functions, subject matters, issues and opinions, both managed and carried out by NSW Jewish Board of Deputies over time; it might act as a substantive memory of the Board itself as the representative body of Australian Jewry. However, unlike Minutes or correspondence, there are no discussions, actions and/or decisions made. They serve as a social perspective to a specific time. Some correspondence appear not to belong in these Newspaper style subject x Files, rather as correspondence of the JBoD. However, where correspondence were in x Files, they have not been removed to respect the basic archival theory and practice of original order*. Though much of the material could be obtained elsewhere, it was determined that the criteria for retaining material would be those representing a unique, contentious, controversial event, person, group, organisation or of a major or significant event pertinent or affecting both Australian or Overseas Jewry though it was not the original intent. Items 059.9; 059.10; 059.97; 059.100 have intrinsic value as they are collections from the immediate post war period, contain significant interests to Australian Jewry and are in the main original newspaper clippings. The appraisal analysis was conducted by a representative of the JBoD, in conjunction with the Senior Archivist. (*Original order simply means keeping things in the order which the person or institution whose archive they were originally kept them. This is important because certain records may have been kept together for a reason, even if it is not immediately obvious what that reason was)
