Events, Programmes and Functions of the Sydney Jewish Museum
Series
Series DescriptionEvents, Programmes and Functions of the Sydney Jewish Museum includes, but is not limited to leaflets, other advertisement and public-marketing material, correspondence, planning, expenditure and other internal organisational documents as they relate to specific events, programmes, and functions of the Sydney Jewish Museum. These events, programmes, and functions include academic and public lectures, private functions, international tours, film screenings; public and youth workshops, exhibition openings, proposals for exhibitions, and other events ran by, at and/or in conjunction with the Sydney Jewish Museum. Although many of the events at the Sydney Jewish Museum are related to their exhibition programme, the Museum endeavours to be 'more than just a history museum' by delivering an extensive calendar of programmes and events relating to both the Holocaust and to Australian Jewry as a whole. As demonstrated in this series, the Museum also provides function space and services for private functions. The following events and programmes are included within this series, but by no means are an exhaustive list: Documents concerning the Summer and Youth Programmes in association with Sydney Jewish Museum exhibitions. This includes the publicising of the Young Einstein's Summer Science Workshop in January 2001. The Workshop ran in conjunction with the Albert Einstein: Man of the Century Exhibition at the Sydney Jewish Museum, and was held at the Outreach Centre for Science at the University of New South Wales. The Summer programme included a child-focused guided tour of the Einstein exhibition, and a half-day of demonstrations and hands-on activities. Other Summer and Youth Programmes includes Come to Shanghai, a programme targeted at primary-age children in conjunction with the Crossroads Jews of Chine Exhibition. An extensive array of both public and academic lectures regarding both the Holocaust and Australian Jewry. Some of these lectures are given in conjunction with the exhibition programme, others are related to contemporary or historical events of interest unrelated to specific exhibitions. Many of these lectures are given internally by in-house academics and curators, others were given by invited guest lecturers from both Australian Universities and Jewish Organisations, and Overseas Educational Institutions and Jewish Organisations. Examples of speakers include Shalom Norman, Professor Konrad Kwiet, Ivy Kerry An extensive public talk and lecture programme was run by the Sydney Jewish Museum in partnership with the Australian Association of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Descendants. Running sheets and associated documents for various book launches of prominence within the Sydney Jewish Community. These running sheets highlight the distinguished members of the Community who participated and spoke at these book launch events - like Eddy Jaku and General Sir Peter Cosgrove. This includes the book launch for Silence Speaks by Australian Jewish News columnist and child Holocaust Survivor Ruth Wajnryb (pronounced vine-rib). Running sheets, background notes, and other various related documents regarding exhibition opening events. These contain, for example, the Background notes to the Australian Official War Artist Program, which was an art scheme conceived during World War One by the official historian and war correspondent Charles Bean, and collated as part of the research accompanying the 'Through Australian Eyes' exhibition and opening event. The War Artist scheme saw 16 artists commissioned to capture the experiences of the first World War, 10 of which were attached to the Australian Imperial Force. The scheme was continued during World War Two and subsequent international conflicts. Works from Australian official war artist Lieutenant Alan Moore were loaned from the Australian War Memorial for the exhibition 'Through Australian Eyes'. These background notes also detail the experiences of survivor Olga (Rosenberger) Horak, whom Alan Moore recalls first seeing in a hospital after the liberation of Auschwitz. Communications regarding events which the Sydney Jewish Museum participated in within the greater Sydney Community and other Australian Organisations. This includes the Sydney Youth Orchestra Concert where Shostakoch's 5th Symphony was played alongside images provided by the SJM, Bloomsday Events in partnership with the James Joyce Foundation, 'A Conversation' held in conjunction with the NSW Council of Christian and Jews, an Introduction to Isaac Nathan joint event with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and the presentation of the Rona Tranby Award in partnership with the Tranby Aboriginal Co-operative Limited at the Sydney Jewish Museum Also included a series of events and lectures ran in conjunction with the Australian Association of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Descendants, see series B7/SJM/019 for more.
