1949 92-97 Contemporary Jewish literature in Australia Judah Waten It is not sufficiently known that. over the last fifteen years a considerable body of literary work of merit-short stories, novels, plays-with Jewish subject matter has been created in Australia by Jewish writers. It is proper to speak of this output as the outline of a Jewish literature, which in a sense is also part of Australian literature. There is one difficulty in viewing Jewish literature as part of the literature of the country. It is that of language. Jewish writing here is partly in Yiddish and partly in English. But the Yiddish works that have been translated into English have been readily accepted into the Australian literature. AJHS 03-02-1949 p0092 52670

1946 350-358 Ballarat Hebrew Congregation Nathan Spielvogel In August, 1851, gold was discovered in Ballarat. To the people of Europe came the story of fabulous amounts of the precious metal being picked up in this new El Dorado of the South. Tens of thousands of adventurous young men left their homes and set out to make their fortunes. During the following four years more than three million pounds worth of gold was taken from Ballarat to Melbourne by police escort, and probably quite as much was carried away by the diggers in their boxes and bags. 1946 349-350 Benjamin Goldsmit Levien Albery Hyamson Benjamin Goldsmid Levien was a son of Solomon Levien and Harriet, daughter of Israel Levien Salomons, who was one of the wealthiest members of Anglo-Jewry. A sister of Harriet married Benjamin Goldsmid, the famous financier and philanthropist of the nineteenth century, of the well-known English Jewish family, and B. G. Levien was obviously named after him. B. G. Levien's parents were almost certainly cousins, for some of the Levien family were also known as Levien Salomons. Salomon's father was Gottschalk Levien, the first Ashkenazi delegate to the Jewish Board of Deputies. I know of two sons and a AJHS 02-06-1946 p0349 52628

His family was part of the thriving and vibrant Orthodox Jewish community in Ballarat, during the nineteenth century. After starting his artistic training in Ballarat he won a scholarship to the National Gallery School in Melbourne. A second scholarship took him to the Royal Academy in London in 1905. He exhibited with success after World War One in both London and Paris. His portraits were sought after because of his masterly technique. 2017 501-504 Pinchas Goldhar Remembered W D Rubinstein Pinchas Goldhar (1901-47) was born in Lodz, Poland and, after graduating from Warsaw University he worked for a Yiddish newspaper in his native city and translated works into Yiddish. In 1926, together with his widowed father, brother, and sister, he migrated to Melbourne, where his father established a business as a dyestuffs merchant in Carlton, Jacob Goldhar & Sons, of which he was a partner. From 1928-31 he became editor of the first Yiddish newspaper in Australia, the Yiddishe Naies. Goldhar began to write stories and commentaries in Yiddish and English. He became part of a circle of Progressive writers and intellectuals in Melbourne. The circle included such figures as the artist Yosl Bergner and the author Judah among local Jews, and non-Jewish leftist intellectuals like Vance and Nettie Palmer, Brian Fitzpatrick, Noel Counihan, and Vic O'Connor. Goldhar died at the age of only 46, of heart disease and diabetes. Since his death has achieved an enhanced reputation as probably the foremost Australian Jewish writer of his time. 2019 525-545 Golden Faith: The Formation of Hebrew Congregations on the Bendigo and Ballarat Goldfields Elizabeth Offer As the rush for gold captivated the world in the mid-nineteenth century, migrants from all over the world sailed and settled on Victoria's booming goldfields. For the migrants travelling to Ballarat and Bendigo, they would bring with them more than just clothes and furniture. Jewish migrants and settlers brought their faith. As gold was unearthed, Judaism was planted, finding a home on these fields of gold which would endure into the next century and beyond. But who were the Jews on the early goldfields? How did these goldfields Hebrew congregations begin? AJHS 24-03-2019 p0525 54050

AJHS 01-01-1939 p0003 52523
1997 23-37 Divergent experiences on the frontier: Jews and Aborigines in early colonial Australia Paul Bartrop This article posits that the Jews of the First Fleet, while not legally discriminated against under British law, were yet excluded on the basis of religion in more informal ways, and thus shared some common ground with Aboriginal people in the early years of the Australian colonies. This article compares the experiences of the two groups. AJHS 14-01-1997 p0023 53461
1989 616-627 'To find the hand unseen': guidelines for Australian Jewish history Lionel E. Fredman This article frames Melbourne Jewish communities in contrast to American Jewish communities. Using this methodology, Fredman gives a broad picture of Jewish history in Melbourne and greater Australia, from settlement to the present. AJHS 10-07-1989 p0616 53125
1988 340-341 Beginning with Esther. Jewish women from New South Wales from 1788 W D Rubinstein Book Review: The late Lysbeth Cohen - the author died, tragically, shortly before this book appeared -has set out to redress this balance, writing an outstandingly-produced, illustrated 458-page work of collective biography that contains dozens of well-written pen portraits and biographical sketches of notable Jewish women in New South Wales, beginning with Esther - Esther Abrahams, First Fleet convict and legendary "founding mother" of the new colony. The careers of women well-known in the community, from the redoubtable Dr. Fanny Reading and Vera Cohen to Susan Bores, and those famous in the wider community, like Nancy Keesing and Judy Cassab, are described with panache and empathy, and with the talented journalist's gift for effortlessly conveying information. AJHS 10-04-1988 p0340 53090
1985 637-638 By my own authority Helen Bersten Book Review: What a marvellous tale-full of excitement, danger, tragedy and miraculous lucky breaks. Yet, it is all true. Marian Pretzel opens his story by saying, "the genesis of this book was to pass on my personal memories to my children." He has done more than that. He has brought to life the courage of a young man bereft of his family, determined to survive in the hostile world of Nazi Europe. AJHS 09-08-1985 p0637 53039
636-637 Jewish writing from down under Louise Rosenberg Book Review: I would have liked to recommend wholeheartedly an anthology entitled JEWISH WRITING FROM DOWN UNDER, but for such a work to succeed a comfortable reciprocity between authors and editor is essential, and nowhere here is this apparent. AJHS 09-08-1985 p0636_a 53038
1985 636-637 Ethics writings in English from Australia. A biography Louise Rosenberg Book Review: The bibliography, Ethnic Writings in English from Australia, is the third revised and extended edition, and is a source of wonder - not so much for what it contains, although this is extensive enough, but for what it has achieved, what its potential as on on-going project will further achieve. AJHS 09-08-1985 p0636 53037
1981 58-61 Be fruitful and multiply Louise Rosenberg Book Review: One of the most comprehensive and beautifully presented genealogical-biographical publications to come into our hands is this privately published book, by Beverley Davis. From the strands and twigs of over 400 different families. she has woven together a valuable social document. The sub-title is 'The Family History', Showing Direct and Collateral Relationships of John Mark A Davis fourth generation Jewish Australian. Mrs. Davis is, of course, the Honorary Secretary of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Jewish Historical Society. AJHS 09-01-1981 p0058 52976
1979 461-463 Formula for survival - The sage of the Ballarat Hebrew Congregation Israel Porush Book Review: Among the provincial Jewish communities in Victoria none has had a longer and worthier history than the Ballarat Hebrew Congregation, still alive around its venerable synagogue and personifying a century and a quarter of extraordinary devotion to Judaism in the process of a heroic battle for survival. AJHS 08-07-1979 p0461 52960
1955 77 Miscellanea: The Great Synagogue and Grafton Jewish communities which have come up in a night and died in a night like Jonah's gourd are not infrequent in Australian Jewish history. The names of Coolgardie, Bendigo and Toowoomba come to mind. Cases in which AJHS 04-02-1955 p0077 52720
1988 339-340 Biography of Australian Judaica Hilary Rubinstein Book Review: In scope and value this remarkable work, the outcome of many years of painstaking research by Dr. Serge Liberman, cannot be overestimated nor praised too highly. It is not only a bibliography of every known work written by Jews in this country up to and including 1985: it records all known works concerning Jews as well, except where Jews are mentioned in a few pages, as in the memoirs of the colonial era travellers Antoine Fauchery and Seweryn Korzelinski.
