AbstractIn August, 1851, gold was discovered in Ballarat. To the people of Europe came the story of fabulous amounts of the precious metal being picked up in this new El Dorado of the South. Tens of thousands of adventurous young men left their homes and set out to make their fortunes. During the following four years more than three million pounds worth of gold was taken from Ballarat to Melbourne by police escort, and probably quite as much was carried away by the diggers in their boxes and bags.
