His family was part of the thriving and vibrant Orthodox Jewish community in Ballarat, during the nineteenth century. After starting his artistic training in Ballarat he won a scholarship to the National Gallery School in Melbourne. A second scholarship took him to the Royal Academy in London in 1905. He exhibited with success after World War One in both London and Paris. His portraits were sought after because of his masterly technique.
