Author(s) Nathan Spielvogel AbstractServices were held in Ballarat. as early as 1853, but the first record of a Synagogue is a report of the consecration of one on November 12th, 1855, with Rev. David Isaacs as the Minister, at a salary of £220 per year. In 1859 the newly formed Town Council desired the site where the Synagogue stood to erect its Municipal Chambers, and in 1860 bought the building for £225. The Government granted a site at the top of Barkly Street for the purpose of the erection of a Synagogue. In 1860 the foundation stone was laid, so the Ballarat Synagogue is eighty years old, the oldest in Australia
