Giving back is a key component of building community.

The Order of Australia was established by Prime Minister Gough Whitlam on 14 February 1975. Prior to that date, Australian citizens had received British honours.

The Order of Australia recognises Australians who have demonstrated outstanding service or exceptional achievement

For non-military, there are four levels of award.

  • Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for eminent achievement and merit of the highest degree in service to Australia or to humanity at large (<=35 per annum)
  • Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service of a high degree to Australia or to humanity at large (<=140 per annum)
  • Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service in a particular locality or field of activity or to a particular group. (<-605 per annum)
  • Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) is awarded for service worthy of particular recognition. (unlimited)

Announcement of awards are made annually on Australia Day and on the Kings Birthday

The first secretary of the Order was Sir David Smith KCVO AO who served from 7 February 1975 to 31 August 1990. Sir David is included in this listing of Jewish awardees.

As of January 2024, members of the Jewish community had received 1,432 out of approx 47,600 awards. 3% from a group who have never been more than 0.5% of the Australian population.
