Series DescriptionConsignment 1: Personal Papers - This series covers Sophie's personal papers which include but not limited to letters, correspondence, both typed and handwritten, in English, German and in French; diaries, photographs; drawings; notes and essays; addresses; printed material such as external articles and essays, ephemera such as personal invitations to balls, speech nights; weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, bat/bar-mitzvahs, gala dinners such as Sir Moses Montefiore Jewish Home Life Governors Dinner; openings of Masada College to name a few, as that related to her involvement, participation, activities and contributions in the community. This collection of papers covers her roles and contributions: - as an educator and teacher in high schools and her role as lecturer/tutor UNSW on Holocaust studies - as an oral historian of Jewish Refugees and Holocaust survivors in Australia - as a genealogical researcher in her role as Founder and President of the Australian Association of Jewish Genealogy Society (AAJGS) and invaluable research material on topics, specifically the Holocaust and her extensive genealogical research of family histories;* - as the editor and Founder of Kosher Koala newsletter for the Australian Jewish Genealogical Society; - as the Hon Secretary of the State Zionist Council of NSW; - as the founder of first post WW2 Jewish school, Masada College; - editor of the Masada College Newsletter; - as Founder of the Hans Kimmel Memorial Essay Competition at Moriah College; - Chairperson of the Edgar Seitel Newman Award - extension of the Dr Hans Kimmel essay competition - Representative in various Committees within the Australian Jewish community such as the Education Committee, the Australian Jewish Historical Society, Australian Association for Jewish Studies; Australian Association of Jewish Holocaust Survivors; as well as international organisations such as the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; Yeshiva & Lubavitch; Zionist Federation of Australia and New Zealand; Bar Ilan University; Ethiopian Jewry Committee; - contributor to publications of organisations to which she either was involved, a member or a participant specifically through the JCA towards caring for the aged, sick or needy and the heritage of Australian Jewry; - her role and research with the Australian Bicentennial Authority, covering ninety-one interviews with European Jewish Holocaust survivors in Australia. - as participant and speaker in learned conferences The series contains items rich in genealogical research material mainly correspondence and ephemera collected from individuals in the capacity of her work as an oral historian and founder of the Australian Genealogy Society. Also includes Index cards to her various research topics. Please note that the overall date range of series 001 1905 - 2002, includes items specifically, personal artefacts such as passports, identity cards, birth and marriage certificates and photographs from Holocaust survivors. The dates often predate her birth, involvement/role in the community. Consignment 2: Consignment 2 are papers held originally at the Archive of Australian Judaica (AAJ). There is added information on Masada college in Consignment 2 due to it being an earlier acquisition.
