Item DescriptionThis file includes but not limited to copies of documents, letters and newspaper articles in relation to synagogues in Broken Hill, Ballarat, Wollongong. Broken Hill council document dated 27/2/1978 a house formerly a synagogue at 165 Wolfram Street; A report by Beverley Davis (1980) titled: Notes on Broken Hill Jewish Community, includes photocopy of booklet titled: Rules and Laws of Broken Hill Hebrew Congregation, Established September 30th, 1900; Part of paper given to Broken Hill Historical Society, 1977, titled "The Synagogue", includes some information on "The Jewish Section of the Cemetery", with names of the oldest - "Louis Diaz, killed 27 February, 1895" and last burial of George Griff (1956), also the words on one of the graves of Samuel Landi : "In Memory of Samuel Landi died 1931 Aged 52 Leaving his worldly possessions to Charities".; Australian Jewish Times (AJT) "Broken Hill Synagogue: Rates, Taxes are unpaid" (17/1/1964); Letter from National Trust of Australia (Victoria) (7/11/1980), re: the Synagogue, Corner McKillop & Yarra Streets, Geelong, built 1861, notifying its classification as an Historic Building and having social importance. Newspaper clippings: "Testimony to survival Ballarat" (unknown pub: 29/5/1986); Australian Jewish Times (AJT): "Small NSW Community to be resurrected" - article is about increasing population of Wollongong Jewish community (4/9/1975); (AJT) "Golden Anniversary for a Golden Couple" (26/9/1984). Letters from The South Coast Hebrew Congregation regarding new building for its Synagogue and communal centre with tie-in editorial headline: "The South Coast Hebrew Congregation" in (AJT) (11/1963). Newspaper article "Shule Seeks Help to Stay Alive" in (AJT) (25/11/1976). Magazine article on "Ardyn Halter", an artist who lives and works in Israel, by Gerald Jacobs (n.d.). Notes: hand-written and typed on The 11th Rabbinical Conference 1988; "Kristallnacht" by Rabbi Dr. Israel Porush (9/11/1938). 3-page editorial in the Jewish Chronicle titled: "From Doom to Hope: Jewish reflections on Britain's social malaise" 24/1/1986). Article in The Australian Jewish News "The rabbinate and its problems" by Rabbi Dr. Nachum Rabinovitch (11/11/1977). Note: 1988 was Australia's Bi-centennial year of historical importance and the following newspapers report a number of prominent men and women from Australia's Jewish community who are recognised in the Bicentennial Australia Day Honours List for their services - this file includes 2-pages from the Australian Jewish Times (29/1/1988): front page headline "Bicentennial Honours for Australian Jews", page 2 headlines "Did the Zionist dream fail as South Africans bypass Israel". The Australian Jewish News (29/1/1988) page 2 "Bicentenary Honours" on flip-side "Peace moves follows unrest", "Besen, Mahlab in AO Honours", "Hayden to renew trade agreement". Conference of European Rabbis Participants in the 15th Conference June 1 - 4 1986 Hotel Silberhorn Grindelwald; Kristallnacht: Meeting at Caulfield Town Hall (6/11/1988) - in Hebrew?
