The Southern Sydney Synagogue, was established in 1999, an amalgamation of Illawarra and Bankstown Synagogues. Between 1931-1935 the congregation was known as the Illawarra Jewish Association then in 1943 - 1945, the Illawarra Hebrew Congregation was founded. The Illawarra Synagogue was founded in 1943 by the late Mr Nathan Haneman.
This collection contains the institutional records created and maintained by the Southern Sydney Synagogue incorporating Illawarra, South Coast and Bankstown Synagogues. Series 001 - 020 show the various activities, functions, transactions and programmes of The Southern Sydney Synagogue. The collection mainly includes hardcopy correspondence and photographs.

Minutes 1931-1935 were known as the Illawarra Jewish Association. In the 1940s the name was changed to the Illawarra Hebrew Congregation
Minutes from 1999 onwards are known as the Minutes of the Southern Sydney Synagogue (amalgamated with Illawarra and Bankstown Synagogue)
The files were a donation by the President of Southern Sydney Synagogue, George Foster.
