Australian Archive of Judaica Institutional Archives

Authority Biography/Administrative History

The Archive of Australian Judaica was founded 4 July 1983, as a Special Collection within the Rare Books section of the Fisher Library of the University of Sydney. The Archive contained records of many Jewish community organisations, some of which are now defunct, and papers of Jewish individuals relating to their activities within the Australian Jewish context.

Guided by the late Professor Alan Crown and subsequently by Sister Marion Dacey, the collection grew, holding 500 shelf metres of material which were collected and processed over the years of the Archive's existence. In 2022, the complete collection in both physical and electronic form was relocated to become a major component of the archives of the Jewish community held by the Australian Jewish Historical Society and are all now documented on this site.
