The Brisbane Hebrew Congregation community was founded in 1865, and the synagogue built on its present site in Margaret Street, the foundation stone being laid in 1885.

The Brisbane Hebrew Congregation is the largest Jewish organisation in Queensland and its Synagogue is the oldest in Queensland. The Synagogue was designed by Arthur Morry and built from 1885 to 1886 by Arthur Midson. The Minute book of the Building Committee covers the first meeting which was called into existence on 4th June 1884 to arrange for the building of the Brisbane Synagogue and was disbanded after the last meeting held on February 9th, 1886.
