Authority Biography/Administrative History

This is a small collection of items collected from the Australian Union of Jewish Students

The collection mainly includes hardcopy correspondence and a photographic collection. It also contains audio-visual material, which in turn have been digitised.
The collection is a disparate rather than a continuous series of records and there was no original order to the records. Publications include publications, magazines, journals, and periodicals produced by AUJS and related associations.

The Australian Union of Jewish Students (AUJS) collection details the administration, activities, and events of AUJS over the period of 1954 to 2019. Originally the National Australasian Union of Jewish Students, AUJS supported Jewish students on Australian University Campuses through activism, international leadership programmes, youth experiences in Israel, and political training. Much of the AUJS collection documents the organisation’s administration and activities of the National Executive, which connected the National Union to the World Union of Jewish Students (WUJS).

AUJS was founded in the 1960s and continues to date. As a national organisation, AUJS brought together both state based subsidiaries of AUJS and individual campus Jewish Societies. These different regional branches of AUJS are reflected in the collection through a plethora of individual publications and much of the ephemeral material produced to promote regionally specific on-campus events and news. These regional branches also had their own executive committees, and this is reflected in the assembly reports and various executive material.

As a student organisation, the AUJS collection varies significantly in tone and content. There are political associations evident throughout the collection - including correspondence from prominent political leaders, and material focused on Israeli advocacy, the Israeli political landscape, the Holocaust, antisemitism, and the intersection of politics and Jewish life in Australia. Conversely, the collection also features promotional material for student parties, publications produced to highlight and support campus life, creative writing, illustrations, and essays.  Often these materials are satirical or comedic in nature and reflect contemporary pop-culture or current events – such the annual AUJS Revue.

In addition to the hardcopy items, the AUJS collection also includes audio reel tapes and audio-visual material which has been digitised, together with recorded video of the AUJS Revues.
