Australian Jewish Genealogical Society

Organisation Archives

Authority Biography/Administrative History

This is a small collection of items collected from the Australian Jewish Genealogical Society. The collection includes hardcopy correspondence, digitised audio material, digital photographs, digitised publications, and digital resources in document form. The collection is a disparate rather than a continuous series of records, with no original order.

The Australian Jewish Genealogy Society collection captures the Society’s members, events, and resources over the period of 1988 until today. Although AJGS is an Australian based organisation, they are a member society of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies - IAJGS. AJGS’s participation in IAJGS and subsequent international seminars is reflected in the audio collection of digitised cassette tapes.
AJGS was founded in November 1991 by Sophie Caplan, who maintained the position of AJGS President until June 2002. Sophie first announced her intention to found AJGS in 1989, with the intention to inform members of ‘all the possibility of Jewish genealogical research’ and provide them with the resources to undertake their own genealogical research. Much of the correspondence in the AJGS collection involves members and prospective members asking both the Society and Sophie directly for help in genealogical research. Subsequently, AJGS has collated many resources for members, including family trees, databases, and overseas contacts to aid their members' genealogical quests.  In 1993, AJGS began publishing their Journal Kosher Koala and continues to be published today – all copies are available digitally via the AJGS website.

In 1995, the Australian Jewish Genealogy Society of Victoria was established to specifically serve the needs of Victorian based genealogical researchers, and this state-based division of AJGS is reflected in some of the collection’s correspondence.
