Founded in 1947 as the Northern Sydney Hebrew Congregation, and having built its synagogue in 1952, it is the oldest synagogue on Sydney's North Shore. On 16 March 1952 the foundation stone of a new house of worship was laid in the company of the Very Reverend Israel Brodie, Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the British Commonwealth of Nations.

The consecration of the new North Shore Synagogue, took place on 15 September 1957. The procession was led by Dr Israel Porush, Chief Minister of the Great Synagogue Sydney.

This is a collection of items collected from the North Shore Synagogue. 

The collection mainly includes original proofs of Book of Reverend William Katz which includes the final stages of proofing and publishing the text 'And The Ark Rested: The Story of A Jewish Community Born During The Holocaust In Europe' by Reverend William Katz, published in 1966. Series includes unbound final drafts of text, including handwritten editor's notes, as well as ephemera such as newspapers and letters regarding the text's publication in 1966. General Correspondence which relates to the North Shore Synagogue, including employment and appointments to positions working with the Synagogue and Moriah College. Series also includes minutes of Board meetings. Musical manuscripts including lyrics in Hebrew. Scrapbooks regarding NSS community, including educational and religious events, important figures and organisations within the community. Bulletins of North Shore Synagogue regarding content relating to history of NSS, Synagogue members, Board members, religious ceremonies held at the synagogue such as Bar and Bat mitzvahs. Annual Reports of North Shore Synagogue including content such as President's Report, Treasurer's Report, Funding, Accounts, Social and Cultural Committees Reports, Membership reports, Batmitvah and Chanukah programs. Unique Publications of the North Shore Synagogue regarding content such as music concerts, fund raisers, activities which culturally engage the community at the Synagogue, such as garden schul. Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah Programmes. Consecrations Programmes of the North Shore Synagogue. Anniversary Programmes of the Consecration of the North Shore Synagogue. Plans and Building Specifications of the North Shore Synagogue including architectural drawings, correspondence, assessments and reports. Photographic Collection of events held at the North Shore Synagogue. Programmes of services held at the North Shore Synagogue such as  consecrations, prayers, inductions. Pamphlet advertisements regarding events held by NSS including concerts, film screenings, dinners. Minutes of meetings relating to content such as student education, NSS members, religious ceremonies. Correspondence, articles, newspaper clippings, personal notes in the German language, including but not limited to relating to William Katz. Audio recordings regarding educational songs.

Scope & ContentThis is a small collection of items collected from the North Shore Synagogue The collection mainly includes both hardcopy and electronic copies of correspondence and photographs. It also contains audio-visual material and audio, which, in turn, have been digitised. The collection is a disparate rather than a continuous series of records and there was no original order to the records.
