The Hebrew Ladies Benevolent Society operated in Melbourne, Victoria from 1857 to 2018. The organisation was consequently also known as the Melbourne Hebrew Ladies Benevolent Soicety, and as the Hebrew Ladies. The organisation served initially to provide financial, food and matieral assistance to married Jewish women with children, facing poverty and during theirr confinements. Following the 19th cenury and into the 20th, the HLBS served an important function in supporting and aiding Jewish refugees to Australia, following the World Wars. The HLBS celebrated their organisation Centenary in 1957 and the 125th anniversary in 1982.  There is a history of collaboration between HLBS and other charitable organisations throughout their active years, and this collaboration is reflected aptly in the volume and content of correspondence. 

This collection dates from 1930 to 2018, with the concentration of records dating from the late 1990's to the 2000's. A significant volume of the collection includes details of the 'Bachelors' and Hosts' Balls', popular in Melbourne during the 20th century. The Bachelors' and Hosts' Balls Committee was a significant auxilary group of the HLBS, and provided an avenue of funding for the Society's philanthropic endeavours.

This is a small collection of items collected from the Melbourne Hebrew Ladies Benevolent Society, referred to as HLBS in this record.

The collection mainly includes hardcopy correspondence, administrative documents, annual reports and a small collection of newspaper cuttings It also contains audio-visual material, in the form of a CD-ROM which has not been digitised at this time.

The collection is a disparate rather than a continuous series of record, and there was original order to the some of the records, which has been reflected in the maitaining of these records in item numbers.
