Author(s) Elias Blaubaum AbstractIn 1903, along with his elder daughter Meta, the ailing Rev Elias Blaubaum (1847-1904), the St Kilda Hebrew Congregation's minister from 1873 and editor of the Jewish Herald from its foundation in 1879, took a short vacation in Sydney before embarking on a leisurely cruise with stopovers around the closest Pacific islands, including New Zealand, in a bid to recover his health. This article comprises selections from material that he sent to the Jewish Herald (edited in his absence and following his death by Moses Moses LLB) from some of his destinations, starting with Sydney and ending with Rotorua. He returned to Melbourne in January 1904 seemingly refreshed and with renewed vigour. But in April he died aged only 56, leaving seven already motherless offspring. These samples of his writings demonstrate how gifted in English German-born Blaubaum was, and what an intelligent, insightful figure Australian Jewry lost with his untimely and much-regretted passing.
