Author David Crowden AbstractThe biographical context for the musician Isaac Nathan continues in Part 2 of this study. The article aims to develop and critically clarify some of the existing evidence relating to Isaac Nathan's biography. It encompasses both historical fact and family legend and contributes to our current understanding of the character and legacy of Isaac Nathan and his family. The article critically compares existing published and unpublished scholarship. Some recent advances in research relating to primary resources have been published as links on the Austral Harmony1 website and appeared midway through this study. As such, the materials found there may be used in conjunction with this article. Nathan taught his children to sing, and several of his descendants seem to have benefited from this oral tradition. Australia's musical environment resonates today with the musical contributions of Isaac Nathan's descendants and student lineage. This article focuses for the main part on our subject and briefly touches on some of the contributions of his family and student lineage. However, further biographical studies on the family and their contributions to contemporary Australia are beyond the scope of this article.
