AbstractLouis Goldsmith KC (1846-1911) was a barrister, chess player, cricketer and the first Australian Jew to play for an Australian Eleven, when, in December 1878 he replaced the injured George Bailey for a game against a Victorian fifteen. Goldsmith was born at Whitechapel, London in 1846, to Polish immigrants. In 1853 the family moved to Melbourne.
