AbstractThe advent of Jewish victims of Nazi persecution into the existing population marks a focal point in Australian Jewish demography. Before this time, the community was largely Anglo in origin with few Jewish migrants from mainland Europe having ventured to so remote a destination. The result of that migration passage was a profound shift in Australian Jewish life, ranging from religious customs to cultural expression. Yet the seemingly easy question of how many victims actually migrated to Australia eludes any precise answers. For reasons explained in this article, definitional and data-related challenges beset efforts to calculate a single estimate using any reasonable statistical boundaries. This article does not set out the complex and numerous changes to Australian government policy that took place towards Jewish refugees well documented elsewhere. However, even the most superficial analysis of the transformation to the Jewish population both by number and by composition is quite remarkable
