Author(s) Gary Luke AbstractEver since the Annual Report of the York Street Synagogue congregation in 1845 a burial in the year 1817 has been regarded as the initial impetus of organised Jewish congregational life in Australia, which was then fulfilled a decade later through the arrival of respectable urbane free settlers. The initial portion in the first two page history in the Report is riddled with dubious embellishments to serve the community's political need by placing their respectability on record in order to gain a government subsidy for construction of the Sydney Synagogue, a stipend for a minister, and to petition for education alongside Christian organisations
