Author(s) Raymond Apple AbstractThis article commemorates the 100th yahrzeit of Reverend Alexander Bernard Davis. Davis, who died in 1913, was a key religious figure who served the Sydney Jewish community for 41 years. Dedicated to the furthering of Jewish knowledge and tradition, described as a man of good sense and stability and an educational innovator, he created the Sydney Jewish Sabbath School. The significance and shortcomings of his textbook Jewish Rites Explained (1878) was part of the school's curriculum. The article discusses its contents, and presents an in-depth analysis in the context of maintaining orthodox practice in the late nineteenth century Jewish community in Sydney.
