However, it must be pointed out that this was not the centenary of the first Jewish settlement in Broken Hill (in 1881 there were already 41 Jews in the town;); nor was it a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the congregation; it was the centenary of the dedication of the 1910 synagogue that, as the book points out, served a Jewish community that had been regularly conducting services for ten years, and that had appointed its first rabbi some five years earlier
