Author(s) Glenn Gordon AbstractThis article analyses some of the factors that led to the rise and fall of several small country and regional Jewish communities, with particular emphasis on the Newcastle community. It examines the importance of the Synagogue and the Minister, and the development of Jewish educational, philanthropic, welfare and social activities and institutions in providing for the continuity of a small community. The relationship of the local Jewish community to the wider non-Jewish community is also discussed, and the roles of the Ahronson family of Cundletown, Nathan Cohen of Tamworth and Morris Light of Newcastle are highlighted.
