Author(s) Janis Wilton AbstractThe Maitland Jewish Cemetery commenced in 1846, had its last burial in 1934, was re-consecrated in 1979 and placed on the National Trust heritage list in 1982. This article discusses the questions of why was the cemetery created, what brought Jews to Maitland, where did they come from, what was life like for them and what can the cemetery reveal about their practices and beliefs. Some of the residents discussed include Solomon and Alfred Levien, Phillip Joseph Cohen, Simeon J Cohen, Henry Robert Reuben, Edward Salamon, Samuel Cohen. David Cohen and Lewis Wolfe Levy.
