Author(s) Raymond Apple AbstractThe little known early 20th century attempt to found an autonomous Jewish colony in the Northern Territory, by Israel Zangwill's Jewish Territorial Organisation, as a haven for persecuted eastern European Jews, is retold. A similar attempt in the 1930's and 40's by Dr Isaac Steinberg's Freeland League to settle the Kimberly region of Western Australia is also mentioned. The article then discusses the scant history of Jewish life in the Northern Territory and why no organized community was ever formed. The early settler Vaiben Louis Solomon (1853-1908), Premier of South Australia for 7 days, is mentioned.
