Author(s) Raymond Apple AbstractThis paper looks at an episode in the late 1920s in Melbourne, which took place when the Judean League was evolving into a major force. The episode involved a conflict between identities for Australian Jews, and centred around the issue of whether it was permissible to play sport, like other Australians, on the Sabbath. The issue became so heated that Rav Kook, the chief Rabbi of the Holy Land, became involved.
