Author(s) Raymond Apple AbstractA person has many teachers but only one rebbe.' So starts this article on the role and influence of the author's mentor Dr Samuel Billigheimer. Dr Billigheimer, a German Jewish intellectual, came to Australia in 1939. Thinker, writer, poet and teacher he searched ways on how to be a religious Jew in the modern world. His doctoral dissertation was on the religious philosophy of the French thinker poet Sully Prudhomme. The article describes the significance of visits to the Billigheimer family home, the locus of music, art and ideas. While he faced difficulties in his life in Australia Dr Billigheimer taught and influenced several young Australian Jews, among them the author of the article Rabbi Dr Raymond Apple.
