Author(s) Russell Stern AbstractBorn and educated in Australia timber merchant and consultant engineer David Walter Davies came to South Africa at a time of the development of Johannesburg and the Rand. He established himself importing West Australian timbers and so received his nickname 'Karri'. A staunch patriot of British endeavours in the Transvaal, Davies co-founded an anti-Boer irregular unit called the Imperial Light Horse. During the Anglo-Boer War Davies took part in the failed Jamieson raid and was imprisoned by the Transvaal government. His exploits during this time became the stuff of legend. The article describes his deeds during this war. It also recounts his wide-ranging activities after the war, namely his involvement in mining ventures, including building a sanatorium for miners suffering from psithis, importing Australian merino sheep to South Africa, and counter-espionage service in World War 1.
