Author(s) Maurice Smith AbstractSmith was the first Jewish NCO to win the Victoria Cross. He was born in Egypt in 1888 to Russian parents, and came to England as a stowaway in the late 1890s, and emigrated to Australia in 1912 and settled in Melbourne. He participated in Indian campaigns and in WWI, for which service he was awarded the VC, as this article describes.
