Author(s) Grace Karskens AbstractIsrael Chapman arrived in Sydney in 1818 aboard the ship "Glory", having been convicted in London of highway robbery in 1817. He had also been a "resurrection man" or grave robber in his youth. He was pardoned in 1827 and married around the same time to Catherine Martin. His career was in police work and he became a much-loved figure in Sydney, though he was later convicted of robbery and died in 1868 in the Benevolent Society as a nonentity.
