AbstractThe calibre of rabbinic leadership is important to the development of Jewish life in the Diaspora and this is particularly true for a more isolated community such as Australian Jewry. Due to the problem of `the tyranny of distance', Australia has attracted only a few rabbis known for their outstanding scholarship, but Rabbi Dr Harry Freedman was one of the exceptions. Even though he was a brilliant scholar and he served two major Australian Jewish congregations whose histories have been written', his contributions have not been sufficiently acknowledged, perhaps because he was more of a scholarly and retiring disposition and was known for his humility.
