AbstractThis article argues that the Catholic press's response to the case was layered and complex, coloured by feelings toward the French Church, doctrinal philo-Semitism, despair over the Irish plight, and other factors. These factors sometimes led to an uncritical acceptance of French anti-Dreyfusard propaganda, but Thornton-Smith posits this sprung not from anti-Semitism but from other causes.
