Author(s) Paul Bartrop AbstractBook Review: Australia has a long history when it comes to bringing war criminals to justice. Under the War Crimes Act 1945, no less than 275 separate trials were conducted by Australian military authorities after the Second World War, resulting in 644 convictions and 148 executions. These were almost all Japanese; Australia played no part in the trial of European war criminals other than where Australians had been directly involved as the aggrieved party. The legislation did not allow for civil courts, so it was only where military jurisdiction held sway that the Australians were able to intervene.
