AbstractBook Review: By any historical assessment the decade of the l930s was momentous, especially in its latter stages. This was particularly so for Jews in Germany, Austria arid other Central European countries who were becoming increasingly vulnerable to Nazi persecution and attacks. It was against this background that the Jewish community in Australia responded to the alarums signalled from Britain to assist those who fled Germany for safer climes. The setting up in 1936 of the German Jewish Refugees' Fund by a handful of communal leaders, under the aegis of Sir Samuel Cohen, was their positive response. This body was the progenitor of the Australian Jewish Welfare Society (AJWS)
