AbstractThis is a tale about women, about Jewish women in New South Wales, particularly about six women born in the nineteenth century whose life's work and contributions to Australian life took place this century. The story of Esther Abrahams, who came as a convict with the First Fleet, who was protected by Lieutenant George Johnston in charge of the Marines and later Acting Governor of the Colony, and who married him after seven children and twenty-five years together, has been told in great detail by the late George Bergman.
