Author(s) AbstractThere have been persistent assertions that Governor Phillip was of Jewish descent. Enquiries made at the Frankfurt Archives and at the Institute of Contemporary Jewry of the Hebrew University by Rabbi John Levi and Dr. G .F. J. Bergman proved that there was no Jewish family of the name of Phillip in Frankfurt and that the name of Phillip does not appear on registers of Jewish communities in Germany before 1800
