Author(s) Israel Porush AbstractThis article looks at how Sydney Jewry solved the problems of conversion and divorce in the absence of a Beth Din. Having originally relied on the Chief Rabbinate in London, in 1875 the Chief Rabbi consented to the formation of a Sydney Beth Bin. However, the goal of an Australian Chief Rabbinate was not achieved due to clashes among congregations, and an Australia-wide Conference of Rabbis and Ministers did not occur until 1946.
