Author(s) Morris Forbes AbstractLast year I read to this Society a paper on the earlier history of Sydney Zionism, and I reminded our members that Australians had shown a charitable interest in Palestine long before the appearance of political Zionism. Important appeals for the Jews of Palestine were held throughout Australia in the 'fifties and 'sixties of the last century, and orthodox, Hebrew-speaking Rabbis were becoming regular visitors to these shores. This is historical fact which might appear to be without significance, and I at first doubted whether this paper would offer any scope for research. As far as possible, my researches are now complete, and I think that it will be agreed that not only is this subject an interesting one, but it also fills a small chapter in the early history of Australian Jewry and supplies the details of some of the first contacts between Australia and Palestine.
