Author(s) David Benjamin AbstractAlthough there was considerable exploratory work done around the coasts of Western Australia before 1829 by English, French and Dutch seamen, there is nothing in the surviving data to associate with it the name of any Jew. No doubt some members of the numerous crews who touched or saw the barren coast were Jews, for there have always been Jewish mariners, but none has left us his name. It follows, therefore, that we must begin this tale with the foundation of the colony in June, 1829, when Captain (later Sir George) Stirling took possession of it in the name of King George IV. We may disregard the Albany settlement of 1827.
