AbstractThe Jewish Girls' Guild was started in April, 1894, by Mrs. J. H. Landau, wife of the Assistant Minister of the Great Synagogue, Sydney. The idea of the originator was to give some philanthropic work to the young single female members of the community who were not considered eligible to serve on the two main women Jewish philanthropic societies, viz., the Sydney Ladies' Aid Society and the Sydney Hebrew Ladies' Dorcas Society, as these societies were entirely managed by married ladies of the community. (These two institutions were afterwards merged into the "Sydney Hebrew Ladies' Maternity and Benevolent Society."
