Author(s) Israel Porush AbstractThe original name of the "Sydney Ladies' Hebrew Maternity and Benevolent Society" (briefly known as the Maternity Society), which celebrates this year the 100th anniversary of its foundation, was "The Hebrew Ladies' Benevolent Institution." It was founded in October, 1844, by a small band of ladies "for the relief of distressed married females of the Jewish Faith during their confinement." According to the booklet containing the rules and regulations of the Society, a copy of which is held by the Society and is dated 1st November, 1844,
