Author(s) Israel Porush AbstractThis paper is based upon the Minute and Letter Books of the Committees of the Bridge Street and York Street Synagogues, which comprise several heavy volumes covering the period 1837-1877. These books were recently found in the vaults of the Great Synagogue, Sydney, the direct descendent of those Synagogues. Therein is found a wealth of material relative to the early formative age of Sydney Jewry. This paper confines itself to the period 1837 to 1844. The Sydney Hebrew Congregation had found its first religious home in the Bridge Street Synagogue, But it is generally assumed that this House of Worship was continuously occupied, probably since 1837 until, owing to the considerable growth of the Jewish community, the Synagogue was transferred in 1844 to the larger and specifically built synagogue in York Street. This is not the case.
