Author(s) Sydney B. Glass AbstractThe period now to be reviewed ushered in a decade during which the Jewish population of the town and district was being steadily added to, and the community became firmly established as the largest Jewish centre in the colony beyond the metropolitan area. The census of 1851 disclosed that there were 75 Jews in the County of Argyle. By comparison, there were 21 at Bathurst, 36 at West Maitland, and 667 in the County of Cumberland. A first Jewish marriage was celebrated in Goulburn in 1850, Reverend Jacob Isaacs' journeying from Sydney to unite in wedlock Samuel Davis, watchmaker and working jeweller of Goulburn, with Sarah 'Phillips, & daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Phillips of Pitt Street Sydney. The ceremony was performed at the home of Mr and Mrs Benjamin, of the Argyle Stores in Auburn Street.
