Authority Biography/Administrative HistoryThis collection was donated by Peter Forrester, whose father Ervin Forrester was personally saved by Raoul Wallenberg.
Ervin Forrester, in close collaboration with Dr Frank Vajda in Melbourne and those concerned about the issue, have succeeded on Raoul’s behalf to:
  • Have gardens and sculptures erected in his honour in both Sydney and Melbourne;
  • Achieved a milestone in having Raoul named as Australia’s First Honourary Citizen;
  • Organised an Australia Post stamp featuring both Raoul and Ervin Forrester’s lifesaving Swedish Schutzpass;
  • Undertaken countless print and electronic media interviews to publicise the story of Raoul and his legacy;
  • Been involved in numerous public events commemorating both Raoul and those inspired by him.
The collection contains local press clippings covering the story and local involvement; black and white photographs relating to the memorial sculpture; commemorative stamps distributed in Australia commemorating Raoul Wallenberg; papers of speeches made by Forrester family at Parliament House, Canberra, and correspondence from notable individuals in Australia and overseas.
Related objects from this acquisition held at the curatorial archives of the Sydney Jewish Museum, include the stone maquette, which was created by renowned Australian artist Anna Cohn, who was responsible for the magnificent statue that adorns the Raoul Wallenberg Garden in Queen Street Woollahra. Photographs of this work of art have been published around the world
