Goulburn Jewish Cemetery and Cultural Landscape Conservation Management Plan CMP - Final Draft Vols 1 and 2

Item

Important Note

The Trustees of the Cemetery are pleased to advise that a specialist consultant team has now finished a Final Draft of the Conservation Management Plan for the Goulburn Jewish Cemetery and Cultural Landscape, which is listed on the State Heritage Register.

The CMP, proudly funded by the NSW Government with a Heritage NSW grant, comprises two volumes and it is being made available for review by people who helped with the research and/or who have an interest in the Goulburn Jewish Cemetery, in Jewish and Family History, in the history of Goulburn and in historic cemeteries. The Goulburn Jewish Cemetery and Cultural Landscape provides significant historic evidence about the nature of the colonial era community in the area at the time of its establishment over 175 years ago. The monuments are a direct record of the local area's prominent pioneer Jewish families, and notable citizens involved in commerce, hotels, and civic life. The cemetery is the major surviving physical evidence of the former strength of the Jewish community in the local area and surrounding region during the nineteenth century. The CMP undertook new historic and physical research, including detailed analysis of the surviving monuments, as well as landscape and archaeological assessment.

The CMP found that that there has been far greater displacement and movement of cemetery fabric than was previously recognised. This CMP provides an Interpretative Strategy for the place and also outlines relevant legislation and other recognised guidelines before examining thed requirements, and constraints arising from the heritage significance of the cemetery and its physical condition.

This is followed by a Conservation Policy, for the future care and management of the place. Recommendations are made about how the Conservation Policy is to be implemented, including actions for the monuments, for the site including its archaeology and grounds; and the sequence and timing of proposed works, indicative costs, and the technical expertise required.

The CMP is quite a large document, so the Trustees request that any comments are limited to substantive issues. The Trustees would be pleased to receive advice about any errors noted in reviewing the CMP or any suggested corrections, in order that these may be considered by the consultant team before the CMP report is finalised.

The deadline for any comments is 31 July 2024.
