Author(s) Percy J Marks AbstractA meeting of the Jewish community residing in the east end of Melbourne was held in March, 1857, for the purpose of forming a local Synagogue. It was decided to establish one under the name of Mikveh Yisrael (Melbourne) Synagogue. Mr. Solomon Solomon was elected President and Mr. M. Nelson Treasurer, the Minister being the Rev. Moses Rintel, who had previously been connected with the older (Bourke Street) Synagogue. Through the exertions of the Rev. M. Rintel, Messrs. M. Nelson, Henri J. Hart and Moritz Michaelis (states Mr. Brodzky). the congregation obtained a grant of land in Stephen Street. The foundation stone was laid on Wednesday, December 28th, 1859-5620 by Mr. M. Nelson, the then President, and it was opened for Divine Service in the following year.
