Author(s) Eric Ramsden AbstractThat is just as true of the Pacific Islands as it is of the great continents. The river that Alexander Salmon (the subject of this paper) selected to sit by was the Taharu'ru, a stream in the Papara district of Tahiti, not far from that great memorial of his wife's family called Mahai-atea (Extensive Mitigation). Before ever a white man set foot on the island, Mahai-atea, this place of ceremonial and ancient worship, was the great national marae, the pride of the clan known as the Teva.
