Author(s) Lieb Falk AbstractThe author, Jacob Saphir, was born in 1823 at Osmina, in the Province of Vilna, Lithuania. When ten years old, his parents journeyed to Palestine, where they settled, at Safed. At the age of 35, Saphir was sent abroad by the Ashkenazi community of Jerusalem to collect money for a school and the building of a Synagogue over the historic site of Rabbi Jehuda the Pious. In these travels he visited many Jewish communities in far off lands, such as Egypt, Yemen, India, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. His journeys, which lasted for one year and nine months, are described by him in two volumes known as Ehen Saphir (Sapphire Stone).
